Pawpaw Rod – A Pawpaw Rod EP
If you’ve spent any time drifting through alt-music corners of the internet lately, chances are you’ve crossed paths with Pawpaw Rod. With his syrupy funk basslines, playful lyricism, and permanently unbothered delivery, he has carved out a lane that feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking.

Born and raised in Hawaii and later based in Oklahoma, Pawpaw Rod emerged from the underground internet scene in the early 2020s. Blending funk, indie rap, lo-fi hip-hop and psychedelic pop influences, he first caught widespread attention with the viral single “Hit Em Where It Hurts”, which showcased his signature mix of humor, groove, and effortless cool. Glossy synths shimmer over elastic basslines, and drums bounce without overpowering. There’s a looseness to his style — but never a lack of intention.
Pawpaw Rod leans into bold colors, retro textures, and surrealist touches. His videos and artwork feel curated but never overproduced — an extension of his sound rather than a marketing accessory.
His debut project, A Pawpaw Rod EP in 2021, introduced listeners to a colorful sonic universe defined by smooth flows, vibrant production, and tongue-in-cheek storytelling such as “Lemonhaze“. Since then, he has continued building a devoted following drawn to his distinctive aesthetic and laid-back charisma with annual EP Another PawPaw Rod EP in 2022, This Must Be a PawPaw Rod EP in 2023 and Doobie Mouth in 2024.
Pawpaw Rod represents a growing wave of artists redefining alternative hip-hop — where groove takes priority, personality drives connection, and genre boundaries dissolve.
